  • Mineral resources are finite and cannot be replaced once mined out, ZCDC attaches significance to the principles of responsible and sustainable mining that promotes environmental rehabilitation to promote economic activity from other sectors after mining.

Current Rehabilitation Activities

ZCDC is conducting Post Environmental Rehabilitation Agriculture projects (PERA): in which ZCDC will sponsor agricultural projects on rehabilitated land in keeping with its environmentally friendly mining model. ZCDC is undertaking progressive rehabilitation in mined out areas and the following activities are currently being implemented;

  1. Tree plantation projects spearheaded by ZCDC’s plant a tree campaign
  2. Borehole drilling and rehabilitation programs to support local agriculture and provide clean water supply to the local community.
  3. Backfilling mined out pits and gullies left open by previous miners
  4. Spreading of waste stockpiles left behind by previous operators
  5. Soil profiling using waste rock, tailings and stockpiled topsoil.
  6. Creating partnerships with locals on nursery projects for use during the re-vegetation of the mined out areas.
  7. Working with the Environmental Management Agency on the progressive rehabilitation project

ZCDC runs a Medical Center which caters for its employees and local communities. This registered facility is manned by qualified Occupational Health Nurses, a Physiotherapist and Occupational Health Medical Practitioners.

Medical Surveillance

According to the Pneumoconiosis Act Chapter 15:08, All employees working in a dusty environment are required to have a valid Pneumoconiosis certificate, All ZCDC personnel undergo pre-employment medical examinations on engagement, as well as periodical examinations. Post employment/termination medical examinations are also conducted.

Due to the strength of the ZCDC Medical Surveillance Systems and the robust Corporate Employee Protection Systems, no incidence of severe occupational disease has been recorded to date since inception in 2016.

Employee Wellness

ZCDC is committed to the well-being of its employees, to date several programs and initiatives have been implemented to prioritize and enhance the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of its employees. The initiatives are designed to encourage physical activity, support healthy habits, and assist individuals in breaking unhealthy habits. These initiatives include:

  • The Know Your Numbers campaign -aimed at preventing and managing non-communicable diseases. The know your numbers campaign is a health initiative that aims to raise awareness about the importance of monitoring and understanding key health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index (BMI).
  • A men’s and women’s reproductive health clinic focusing on reproductive health and well-being, breast and prostate cancer screening, HIV testing and general health education among other things.
  • Regular ergonomic assessments through the services of Wellness facilitators to identify and address ergonomic risk factors.
  • BMI self-monitoring
  • Mental health and substance abuse awareness.
  • Health Education and promotion.

Communicable Disease Surveillance

Communicable diseases are infectious diseases or illnesses caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites and can be spread from person to person, animal to person, or through the environment.

Surveillance for communicable diseases is crucial for ZCDC to manage outbreaks and ensure productivity of its employees

Communicable disease Surveillance helps ZCDC to take proactive measures to prevent and control infectious diseases, ensuring a healthier and safer workforce.
