Current Rehabilitation Activities
ZCDC is conducting Post Environmental Rehabilitation Agriculture projects (PERA): in which ZCDC will sponsor agricultural projects on rehabilitated land in keeping with its environmentally friendly mining model. ZCDC is undertaking progressive rehabilitation in mined out areas and the following activities are currently being implemented;
- Tree plantation projects spearheaded by ZCDC’s plant a tree campaign
- Borehole drilling and rehabilitation programs to support local agriculture and provide clean water supply to the local community.
- Backfilling mined out pits and gullies left open by previous miners
- Spreading of waste stockpiles left behind by previous operators
- Soil profiling using waste rock, tailings and stockpiled topsoil.
- Creating partnerships with locals on nursery projects for use during the re-vegetation of the mined out areas.
- Working with the Environmental Management Agency on the progressive rehabilitation project
ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation of mined out areas is one of the fundamental strategies to ensure the disturbed mining environment may rejuvenate and return to its natural status after mining. Rock waste generated by mining is similarly used for in-pit dumping to ensure progressive rehabilitation of mined out pits. ZCDC is going through a project of rehabilitating all mined out areas by planting indigenous trees to return the land to its natural state (forest). The organization follows a comprehensive rehabilitation program which includes tree planting and in-pit dumping
Climate change and carbon emissions
ZCDC aims to reduce its carbon footprint by switching from fossil powered plants to clean technologies like solar energy To create Carbon sink for the operational emissions, the Organisation has embraced reforestation strategies by planting indigenous trees, growing fruit trees and greening the mine through the various landscaping activities.
Air and water pollution
Wastewater is managed on a Zero discharge principle and is recycled back into the system to prevent environmental contamination as well as conserve freshwater resources.

Biodiversity
The organization successfully carried a Biodiversity impact assessment successfully carried out through SIRDC contractor for Chiadzwa and Chimanimani sites
Waste Management
The organization currently practices waste segregation with the aim of empowering the Community through various waste recycling and reusing projects in order to effectively manage waste generated from the various processes / activities to mitigate against environmental pollution
