Geology

Geology

  • ZCDC geology department is responsible for discovering, evaluating and developing primary
and secondary diamond deposits throughout Zimbabwe. ZCDC holds mineral rights through
Special Grants, EPOs and Mining claims according to the Mines and Minerals Act, 2021.
  • To achieve the above mandate, ZCDC Geology department has a team of competent experts,
with technical ability to undertake world class exploration activities, and Mineral resources
    management.
  • Diamond deposits are classified as Primary (kimberlites and lamproites) and Secondary
(sedimentary and paleo-sedimentary placer deposits. The Geology department has dedicated
teams responsible for Greenfields and brownfields exploration activities and Production geology.

Greenfields Exploration Projects

  • These involve exploration work in areas where there is little or no geological information
available. Focus is mainly on kimberlite pipes exploration and evaluation.
  • Current projects are at Wengezi, Chikara, Mahusekwa and several kimberlite pipes in Masvingo
    Province.
  • Microdiamond analysis, bulk sampling has been done with positive results on some on the
projects. More geological evaluation work is being done to upgrade exploration results to
    diamond resources.
  • ZCDC is in partnership with various players for diamond exploration in line with the Diamond
    Policy.

Brownfields Exploration Projects

This section is responsible for evaluation of conglomerate-hosted diamond deposits within the
Chiadzwa Special Grants. The deposits in the brownfields category are evaluated using Diamond
core drilling and Bulk sampling. The brownfields exploration activities:

  • Currently ongoing in Chiadzwa Portals A, I(ii), D, J and K.
  • Aimed at defining new resources and enhance the mineral resource base
  • Upgrade the resources from inferred into indicated categories.

Resource Generation

  • 3D geological model is generated from drilling data using geological softwares.
  • The model is used for resource generation and reporting, using international standards for reporting of diamond resources.
  • Conglomerate diamond deposits are drilled, blasted, crushed, processed during sampling
  • to determine grades for resource generation

Production Geology

  • Production geology activity includes all processes that are directly involved in the
production of diamonds. The activities include; grade control, screening analysis, random
    production sampling and quality control.
  • It is responsible for the daily running of the geology function on production.

Resource Planning

  • Resource planning of all deposits are developed to facilitate development of short,
    medium and long term plans.
